It has become customary to give your beloved a gift on your wedding day and a tasteful romanic portrait of yourself might just be the perfect gift. I recommend using your bridal lingerie or something from your bridal shower that you may wear on your honeymoon. I've also had brides do a portrait as a 1st anniversary gift as the traditional 1 year gift is paper! Boudoir photography is something i've offered for years and enjoy doing. It can be an empowering experience for the subject. I found this article on it and thought i'd repost it.

Location: Sunset Beach

On this one the name really does say it all. Sunset Beach is a beautiful curving white sand beach that is known for its world famous sunsets and surf contests. Located on the North Shore of Oahu. This beach is popular but largeso it doesn't seem as crowed as it really is. Its very easy to find right along Kamehameha HWY. There is a parking lot across the street as well as restrooms.

Below are some maps of specific areas I recommend in the vicinity. Images borrowed off of google maps.

Directly down the street from Sunset Beach Park are few less crowed secluded neighborhood beaches that are accessible through beach access trails off of Oopuola Street and Kahauola Street. I good marker for the area is Ted's Bakery. Which by the way has AMAZING chocolate and haupia (coconut) cream pie. Its a must try!

The Cost of Good Photography Work, what really goes into it.

A follow photographer friend of mine posted this and I found it quite relevant. In case you were wondering why photography still costs what it did in a era of film I think this guy put it pretty well.

WHY DO PHOTOGRAPHERS CHARGE HIGH!!!!

(This article has been very well received by the photography community, and is now referred to by many Photography websites across the country)

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras, scanners and home "photo printers", when people upload their photos to a local drug store website and pick them up a few hours later, we hear this all the tim
e - How in the world do Professional Photographers charge $55 for an 8x10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drug store?

Here's why.

Simply put, you're not just paying for the actual photograph, you're paying for time and expertise. First, let's look at the actual time involved. If you don't read this entire page, at least read this first part.

For a two hour portrait session:

- one hour of travel to and from the session
- two hours of shooting
- 30 minutes of setup, preparation, talking to the client etc.
- 30 minutes to load the photos onto a computer (2 - 4 Gb of data)
- 30 minutes to back up the files on an external drive
- 3 - 4 hours of Photoshop time including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, saving a copy for print and a copy for the internet and backing up the edited photographs
- 2 - 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive their order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment and drop package off at Fed Ex.
- For local customers, we also print a set of all of their photos, and meet them at our studio to review the photos and place their order. Meeting and travel time averages 2 hours.

You can see how one two hour session easily turns into more than ten hours of work from start to finish. So when you see a Photographer charging a $200 sessio
n fee for a two hour photo shoot, you are not paying them $100 / hour.

For an eight hour wedding:

- I won't bore you with the details, but an eight hour wedding typically amounts to at least two to three full 40 hour work weeks worth of time. Again, if they are charging you $4,000 for an eight hour wedding, you are not paying them $500 / hour.

Now for the expertise.

Shooting professional photography is a skill, acquired through years of exp
erience. Even though a quality camera now costs under $2,000 taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.

Most Professional Photographers take years to go from buying their first decent camera to making money with their photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera itself, there is a mountain of other equipment involved, as well as numerous software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website etc.

And let's not forget that you actually have to have people skills, be able to communicate, make people comfortable in front of the camera - and posing people to make them look their best in a photograph is a skill all by itself.

Think of it this way - the next time you pay $X to get your hair done, a pair of scissors only costs $1.50. But you gladly pay a lot more to hire a Professional.

What about the cheap studios at the mall?

Please don't compare us to the chain store studios. But if you must, consider all of the time and work that we put into our photographs, compared to what they do. Good luck getting a two hour photo shoot at a chain store. Not to mention they won't come to the beach! And of course, look at our work compared to theirs. You get what you pay for.

The truth is, most of the mall and chain store studios lose money. In fact, in 2007 Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios because of the financial drain they were putting on the company. What the chain stores bet on is that you'll come in for some quick and cheap photos, and while you're there, you'll also spen
d $200 on other things. They don't have to make money, they are just there to get you in the door.

Conclusion

We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs cost so much more than the ones that you get from your local drug store.

I've gotten behind in my HNLnow.com and Star-Advertiser posts. These are from the night before New Years Eve. I had a full night with a 9 hour wedding in the evening and then two different events at night for the paper and website; luckily had two great friends tag along for what they were calling "career day with Malia" hahaha my work is always less work like when I have company!

First stop was a packed salsa night at Blue Ocean Thai. With lots of friendly people, a bustling dance floor, and a great live band it was hard to leave!

The next stop was at Hawaiian Brian's pool hall for one of my favorite bands from high school, Pimp Bot. It being a holiday for all the youngster they had a dance party of high-schoolers forming a 'mosh-pit' on the dance floor.

Photos from last weeks Hnlnow.com and Star Advertisers Pulse of Honolulu assignments. One of the things about my job that is both a pulse and a minus is that I get assigned to go to events, clubs, concerts that i would never ever attend of my own choosing. It adds a little more stress to a gig in that i've never been there, don't know where to park, don't know the promotors, and the door guys aren't as familiar with me as when its a place i cover regularly. Its also fun because i'm forced to broaden my horizons, meet new people, and discover some really neat new venues. Last week I got double reggae gigs. One at UH and the other at a fairly new venue that ended up actually being a place i've gone to dozens of times when it was a few different clubs. Its always fun to see how new owners change around the decor and feeling of a location. Talked my roommate into coming along. Even did a short stop off in China Town to show her some of the First Friday monthly art show block party. Shear craziness that I usually avoid like the plague! but she's moving to the mainland in a few weeks and has never been so I figured it was something she should experience before moving. All and all a fun night despite the fact that i'm not a huge fan of reggae.

Surrounded by their collective children as their wedding party they said "I do" beach side at Hale Kimo on the beath-takingly famous Sunset Beach on the North Shore of Oahu. kids are cute, we love dressing them up in little tuxs and fluffy dresses, but seriously sometimes I think they shouldn't be in the wedding party. I read and article that suggested you use you dog as the ring barer since he he at least as predictable as your 5 year old nephew. Watch this and see why . . . .

oh and its also yet another example of why having a wedding around a pool is a bad idea.

If your planning an outdoor event one consideration is mosquitos!

One solution is to provide a bug repellant for your guests to spray on if need be.

However commerical bugs sprays come in ugly bright neon bottels, smell bad, and contain protentally harmful chemicals.

The solution? All natural and locally made bug-be-gone!

The spray bottles and small, nutral toned, and smell of eucalyptus and lemongrass.

The product is made in Wailua on the North Shore of Oahu and smells great!

Defiantly one of the most unique weddings i've ever shot, there was a tux made out of liquid latex and togas at the end. ya you heard right!

When asked if they felt like doing some romantic posed shots they responded: "No, we like dirt bikes and monster trucks!" so we did photos in his off roading truck! very fun wedding.

I work with this company and let me say have never had more fun at work! Whether it's a wedding or a party the booth is always packed. Sometimes the laughter is louder than music!

Not only do the guests have a blast taking photobooth pictures but get a print out right away to take home with them as a party favor. The hosts of the party win out by not only providing entertainment for their guest but also get a digital copy of all the pictures as a keepsake of the fun all their guests had.
